Spring Cleaning Your Garage

If the only thing you can fit in your garage is your car, it’s time for some spring cleaning! This is the perfect time of year to clear out the clutter in your residential garage and create some designated spaces for storage.

Start by decluttering:

  • Set aside a full day or weekend to dedicate to the task.
  • Make it a family project! Get the kids or friends involved to help speed up the process.
  • Sort everything into four piles: Toss, Sell, Donate and Keep.
  • If you struggle with letting something go, ask yourself if you’ve used it in the last year. If the answer is no, sell, donate or toss it.
  • Don’t keep items just because you may use them someday. Do an honest assessment of your current needs.
  • If you find it tough to get rid of an expensive item, remember that the money has already been spent. Keeping it and not using it won’t bring it back!
  • Take a look at your Toss pile and recycle whatever you can.
  • Drop off your donate items to a local community center or organization.
  • Sell items can be set aside for a yard sale, delivery to local consignment stores or online selling.

Next, organize your Keep pile:

  • Store frequently-used items, like pet leashes or shopping bags, near the door on hooks.
  • Group items that are used together, like gardening tools or car care supplies, in “zones” so they may be stored together.
  • Set aside bulkier items, like a snow blower or lawn mower, in the garage’s two back corners.
  • Rarely used items, like holiday decorations, should go on higher shelves of shelving units.
  • Use your wall space! Hanging up items like rakes, shovels and bikes frees up valuable floor space in your residential garage.

Crawford Door of Western New York, Inc. was recently profiled in the “Meet Your Merchant” section of Moneysaver Shopper and Community Magazine.

The piece profiles our owner-operators, Pete and Holly Hunter and tells the story of how Crawford has been nurtured and grown since Pete purchased the business in 2004.

“Pete and Crawford have a reputation for responsiveness, quality products and installations or repairs done right the first time, and especially – as Holly was quick to point out – honesty. Crawford has passed the test of time. Unlike so many of the fly-by-night and “Johnny come lately” door companies that lure customers in with special low price offers and then provide an inferior product or bait and switch customers into a host of additional charges, Crawford gives you an honest appraisal of the work needed on repairs or a free estimate on a new door. Then they do what they said they would do, on time, professionally, with no surprises or problems and charge what they said they would charge.”

Garages serve many purposes — they are storage spaces, areas for pursuing home projects and even play areas at times, but they can also pose security and safety challenges. Follow these garage door safety tips to keep yourself and your belongings secure.

  1. Always keep the garage door opener button away from small children.
  2. Remind young children that garage door remote controls are not toys.
  3. Review the owner’s manual for your garage door and read about its emergency release features.
  4. Every month, check the door for signs of wear and inspect rollers, cables, springs and pulleys. If you notice an issue, contact our professional service team for garage door repair in Buffalo instead of attempting repairs yourself.
  5. Teach your children to never place their fingers between sections of the garage door, or shop for panels that cannot pinch.
  6. To keep your belongings safe, never leave your garage door partially open.
  7. Only purchase garage door parts in Buffalo from a reputable contractor.

When is the last time you took a close look at the outside of your home? What characteristics stand out as you drive by it on the street? Do you notice overgrown shrubs? Is the paint peeling? Are you welcomed by lights on a dark evening? The answers to these questions are related to the curb appeal of your home — the first impression it makes from the outside.

Real estate pros frequently reference curb appeal during the selling process because many house-hunters form opinions about residences before they ever step foot inside them. This is an instance where the book is definitely judged by its cover!

Even if you aren’t planning on putting your home on the market, curb appeal is still important. A beautiful exterior gives you a sense of pride in your home and improves your neighborhood while sending a positive message about your family.
